140th Anniversary

140th Anniversary 1878 – 2018


140th. Anniversary to celebrate 140 years of worship in this place that is now Flowergate United Reformed Church.

 A week-end of celebrations – 24th./ 25th. March with the Moderator of the General Assembly & Yorkshire Synod, the Rev. Kevin Watson as Special Guest and Keynote Speaker for the week-end of celebrations.
Sunday 25th. March - Palm Sunday: Morning Worship led by the Moderator with music by the group of ‘Ring-a-round friends’ from Scarborough. The music was truly wonderful and Easter Week could not have got off to a better start. The Moderator again challenged those attending with another inspirational Sermon and this was a great way to sign off on our celebrations for our 140th. Anniversary.
Celebrations began with an open invitation to a Coffee Morning with a difference. The jelly Rolls Jazz Band were playing their music in the sanctuary while everyone enjoyed their coffee and biscuits.

After Lunch the Jelly Rolls Jazz Group played a second session but this time on the Church steps
Gospel Concert in the afternoon with the well known gospel singer Paul Wheater, known far and wide as Britain’s own Jim Reeves. His music repertoire is varied with even a ‘bit’ of Elvis in there. But it also included ‘Amazing Grace’, the Christian’s National Anthem. Afternoon Tea was served in the Upper Room during the mid concert interlude.

Following the Gospel Concert, the Keynote speaker for the week-end, the Rev. Kevin watson, Moderator of the General Assembly and Yorkshire Synod, gave an inspirational and challenging sermon on how he sees the Challenge facing the Church today, which he believes is as great as that faced at the time of the Reformation.

On behalf of Flowergate URC, Michael Mewis presented the Moderator with a specially embroidered 'stole' to mark the occasion.

The Palm Sunday Morning Worship was again led by the Moderator with Music by a group of 'Ring-a-round-friends' led by Ann Bull from Scarborough. their music was truly wonderful and the congregation sang their hearts out with the uplifting live music to inspire them.
Easter Week could not have got off to a better or more inspirational start.
